Some people go off-roading for a weekend, or a week. These two left the busy life behind and went off-roading for over a year, straight, living out of their modified Jeeps. We talk about how they do it, why they do it, their Baja tours, what they drive, and how you can join in.

I have zero interest in that lifestyle, but listening to them was completely entertaining. One of the best shows so far!

Something like 80% of the land out West is state/national forest. If you enjoy the outdoors it is the best part of the country for exploring.

Great podcast. Coming from the Montero/Pajero prospective overlanding can be tons of fun. Mitsubishi used to build very rugged , dependable , go anywhere , factory locked rigs that are still underrated and dirt cheap. 96 Montero SR and 05 Montero Limited (not Montero sport...different vehicle completely) Regarding the question about manual transmissions, the first manual car I bought I just drove home with zero experience. A few stalls later you just figure it out because there is no other alternative. You'd be surprised how quickly you learn when it's a necessity. Just pick your roads so your not in heavy traffic situations.

Sorry tu burst your bubble Zack but solar cannot deliver that much power, the math just does not work out. Matt is right, solar is moving quite slowly and it still has to adhere to the rules of physics. But ripping the transmission out of a Jeep and using a range-extender type drivetrain (like the volt) could be awesome

As far as a vehicle that would be able to run as a plug-in hybrid that technology already exists, and if you run a small diesel (4 cyl or even 3 cyl) as a generator a la the Volt as well as having a trailer you can leave in a KOA or charging location while out in the hills wheelin’ for the day or 2 days to allow you to run full electric on your long hauls in between off-road excursions. With a setup like that and if you’re willing to descend really slow winding up the generator (or have high-enough throughput to charge that fast effectively) you would have a pretty skookum setup. If you think about it if you have a charging plugin setup for the trailer alone if you ran into a charging station you could (if you weren’t hogging too many spaces for politeness sake you could charge 2x the batteries by using 2 spaces in slow time or sleeping overnight). Obviously solar would be integrated as one of the trickle charge setups (until supercaps get more efficient and able to store more power), then it would be with more efficient panels and more of them as surfaces on the vehicle for a faster and more efficient charge.
